Fresno surgical technology instructor Doug Hughes has an article published in this month's issue of The Surgical Technologist, the journal of the Association of Surgical Technologists. The article focuses on two advancing technologies that hold the potential to revolutionize healthcare as we know it: robotic anesthesia machines and natural orifice surgery. Anesthesia robots monitor the patient, induce anesthesia, and administer medications automatically throughout the procedure, thus eliminating the need for the constant care of an anesthesia provider. During natural orifice surgery, a high-tech endoscope with specialized instruments is placed through the mouth or anus. Via this approach, a myriad of complex surgeries can be performed without the need to create an incision through skin. The lack of an incision eliminates the need for abdominal wall dissection and enhances postoperative healing and cosmesis.

Waterless Surgical Hand Scrub

This week in the lab the focus is on scrubbing. The surgical scrub is an important part of aseptic technique and the prevention of infection. Several techniques and products have been developed to facilitate the surgical hand scrub. One of these is the waterless scrub. In our lab, we have avagard waterless scrub solution located next to the traditional scrub sinks. Because this method has become very commonplace in operating rooms throughout the world, the performance of a waterless scrub is a skill that you will learn and check off on this week. We are all very excited to have them and look forward to working with each and every one of them as they begin this first step in laying the foundation for their future career. The next sixteen months will prepare these students for life in the operating room. It will be filled with hard work, sacrifice, studying, and yeah... maybe some fun too! When things start to get tough, remember that "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it!"

Congratulations new freshmen on taking the initiative to learn and enter this exciting career field. Please do not hesitate to talk to your instructors whenever you need help or guidance. First All-Robotic Surgery: McSleepy Meets DaVinci

Doctors at McGill University Health Centre, Canada, have recently performed the world's first all-robotic surgery. The locally developed McSleepy put the patient on anesthesia, while surgeons used the well-known DaVinci robot to perform a prostatectomy. It was the first time these two robotic systems were combined.
From the press release:
“Providing anesthesia for robotic prostatectomy can be challenging because of the specific patient positioning and the high degree of muscle relaxation necessary to maintain perfect conditions for the surgical team,” added Dr. Hemmerling. “Automated anesthesia delivery via McSleepy guarantees the same high quality of care every time it is used, independent from the subjective level of expertise. It can be configured exactly to the specific needs of different surgeries, such as robotic surgery.”
“Obviously, there is still some work needed to perfect the all robotic approach - from technical aspects to space requirements for the robots,” added Dr. Hemmerling. “Whereas robots have been used in surgery for quite some time, anesthesia has finally caught up. Robots will not replace doctors but help them to perform to the highest standards.”

This first test was successful and now the team plans to expand their tests to more and larger types of surgery.

SJVC Performs Mock Surgery in the Mall

In commemoration of National Surgical Technologist Week, the San Joaquin Valley College Fresno campus surgical technology program sponsored a mock surgery demonstration at Center Court in the Sierra Vista Mall. The purpose of the event was to raise public awareness about the profession of surgical technology. Students and instructors performed a simulated open appendectomy which allowed mall visitors as well as the student’s family, and friends to experience what actually happens behind the mysterious double doors of the operating room. The students enjoyed the opportunity to show off their newly acquired skills and share their enthusiasm for their new career path.

SJVC Fresno Haiti Relief Fundraiser

In the wake of the disaster in Haiti many organizations have rallied support for the efforts to help those in need in that region. As a way to show our support, SJVC has placed a donation center in the main lobby of the Fresno campus at the Student Services desk. This effort, under the direction of campus director Dr. John Swiger, will include several events that will hope to increase the amount of money we are able to give to the victim's of Haiti's earthquake. One of these events is outlined below:

On February 11, a basket raffle will be held in time for Valentine's Day. We encourage the Surg Tech program to participate in this fundraiser and put together a Valentine's Day basket to be raffled along with baskets from other departments and classes. The baskets must be submitted by February 5 and will be placed on display. On Monday, February 8, raffle tickets will go on sale for $1.00 a each at the Student Services desk. Before the raffle, the tickets will be counted and the class with the most tickets purchased for their basket will win a pizza party!

Haiti Disaster Has Only Just Begun

In the wake of the disaster that struck just west of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, a medical emergency is quickly taking a toll on the already devasted country. With significant aftershocks continuing, over 100,000 people reported dead, hospitals and key medical facilities in ruble, and many key medical personnel missing, the area is in full crisis. Current reports are that approximately 3 million people are injured and public health resources are seriously drained. According to the Haiti government, many of these people will not be able to receive the care that they need. In an attempt to send aid to the victims of the earthquake, non-profit organizations are asking for money rather than goods. With many organizations already on the ground providing the victims with the supplies that they need, they are calling for monetary donations to help them in their efforts. Here are some ways we can help:

To send help to Haiti quickly, please text the word “HAITI” to “90999″ and a donation of $10 will automatically be sent to the American Red Cross and will be added to your cell phone bill.

Happy new year to all of the friends, family, staff, and students of the San Joaquin Valley College Fresno Surgical Technology program. 2009 has certainly been a year to remember, and as always, the year has flown by. The coming year will hold a lot of challenging and exciting times for the surg tech students. As we round out the final weeks of term one, the students are gearing up for term two. This term will consist of 15 weeks of classroom and laboratory instruction for the soon-to-be sophomores that will hone in their skills and prepare them to enter the operating room at their assigned clinical sites and begin to assist in surgical operations on real patients. The junior class will be moving into their final term as seniors and will continue their clinical externships at new facilities. Please take a moment to congratulate your son, daughter, spouse, mom, dad, friend, or family member on their accomplishments so far as they have embarked on the journey toward gaining a rewarding education and career. Good luck to all of you as we start this new year. Happy 2010!

Congratulations are in order for the Surg Tech program. We have set a new attendance record! Attendance at SJVC is calculated in 5 week modules because of the schedules of all of the other programs on campus. With that said, this is the first time EVER that the SJVC Surg Tech program has made it through the first five weeks of a new start with every student still enrolled in the program. WOOHOO!!!! We have witnessed unprecedented attendance for both the freshman and junior classes. Keep up the good work everyone. It is this type of dedication that will get everyone to graduation night.

We're in the Journal!

We're in the journal! The new edition of the "The Surgical Technologist" features a summary and photos from SJVC's Surgical Technology week open house held back in September. This was a great night. We had over 100 people in attendance, and several of those are now current students in the freshman class. We also had the help of several current students during the event. A big thanks to those of the junior class who were in attendance and helped out.

SJVC's Surgical Technology open house is now in its sixth year. It has proven to be a wonderful way for the community to get a hands on lesson in what happens in an actual operating room. The open house was preceded by television and radio advertisements that helped bolster interest in the program and in the profession. What better way to get the word out about who we are and what we do!

Freshmen Experience Their First Lab Day

The freshman class was nervous and excited as they experienced their first day in the surgical lab. This week they had a great introduction as they learned many of the skills and concepts behind sterile processing and the preparation of goods for sterile storage and use. The students passed off their first set of skill assessments this week and are now proficient in sterile wrapping and packaging techniques as well as the use of proper operating room attire and the correct method for the basic handwash. Great job class! You all deserve a great big round of applause!

This term will focus on the basic theories and principles of the practice of surgical technology and build a foundation for their advanced lab and surgical procedure theory courses next term.
